As part of this replacement program, the company recalls some iPhone 5 models for battery problems and replaces the faulty batteries for free of cost.

The iPhone 5 with defective batteries fall within a limited serial number range. To know whether your device is eligible for the battery replacement program or not, enter your product’s serial number to Apple's website.
If your product is eligible, you will get options to take the device to an Apple Retail Store, Service Provider or call Apple Technical Support to have the battery replaced. Affected iPhone 5 users in the US and China have replaced the battery via the iPhone 5 Battery Replacement Program.

From August 29, iPhone 5 users in Europe can take in their affected device to one of these service options for having their battery replaced for free. You must backup your phones data to iTunes or iCloud, turn off the “Find my iPhone” option on iCloud and erase all data and settings before having your battery replaced.
If your device is damaged or has cracked screen, then you have to get that fixed prior to the battery replacement process. Those, who had already replaced their iPhone 5 battery, will get refund from the company.
