Nippon Cargo settlement over Price-Fixing

Nippon Cargo Airlines has decided to settle a long-running class action lawsuit over price-fixing charges. A memorandum of understanding has been signed by the company and it will file a formal class action settlement agreement with the court soon. Plaintiffs filed a case against Nippon Cargo Airlines alleging that carrier conspired with other airlines to increase the price to ship goods by air. This happened during much of the 2000s. The U.S. Department of Justice and the European Commission began investigating the air freight industry in 2006 and found that numerous airlines conspired to determine the rates the airlines should charge for various routes.


After this investigation, lots of class action lawsuits were filed against dozens of airlines. Up till now, the defendants have agreed to pay over $835 million to resolve the class action lawsuits. In 2009, Nippon Cargo agreed to pay out $45 million to resolve the Department of Justice's claims.
