Michaels has settled a class-action lawsuit over collection of ZIP Code. Class members can get $10 or $25 cash value voucher.

Have you been asked to provide your ZIP code while making a credit or debit card purchase at Michaels stores between May 23, 2007 and February 12, 2014? If yes, then you are entitled to get compensation from the Michaels ZIP Code Collection class action settlement. Michaels has agreed to pay $875,000 in class action settlement to end the lawsuit over collection of ZIP Code. The company will pay compensation in the form of vouchers. Consumers, who are affected by this illegal practice of ZIP code collection, will receive $10 or $25 cash value voucher.

In 2011, plaintiffs filed the lawsuit claiming that Michaels asked customers to provide personal identification information when they made a credit or debit card purchase. The company used their personal identification info/Zip code to identify their mailing addresses, and thus violated the Massachusetts law. Plaintiffs also alleged that the company sent marketing materials to customer’s home. The company refused these claims but agreed to settle the lawsuit for avoiding the cost and risk of a trial.

There are two sub-classes: sub-class one and sub-class two. Sub-class one consists of the customers who made a credit or debit card purchase with Michaels and from whom Michaels asked to provide personal identification information and obtained their mailing address solely by the ZIP code append. The sub-class two includes the customers who made a credit or debit card purchase with Michaels and from whom Michaels asked to provide personal identification information and obtained their mailing address from a source other than the ZIP code append.

Class members in sub-class one will get $25 cash value voucher while members in sub-class two will get $10 cash value voucher. This voucher can be used at any Michaels store within 90 days from the date of issue. Customers can combine the cash value voucher with other offers and promotions.

The Class members will get the cash value voucher within 20 days after the Court approve the Settlement through mail. They don’t have to submit any form.
